The Russian Commander’s Wife

Searching for Hugo

Searching for HugoThanks to Ruth Marcus of Tel Aviv, we now know the name of the woman who played such a nefarious role in Hugo’s fate. Her name was Barbara Danilov. She was the second wife of General Michael Nikiforovitch Kaygorodov, who assumed command of the 26th Infantry Division, stationed in Grodno, on November 9, 1907. Those who have read the book might notice a coincidence in that date. General Kaygorodov was commander of the Fortress of Grodno during 1914 and 1915.

I don’t want to spoil the story for those who haven’t read it yet, so will only say that Barbara Danilov’s dastardly deeds qualify her for the role of villain of the book.

  1. Ruth Marcus just informed me that the Russian form of the name of the commander’s wife was Varvara Alekseevna Danilovskaya (Варварa Алексеевнa Даниловской).
